We’ve always believed that becoming a parent shouldn’t mean losing the home you’ve spent years creating.
Yes, family life brings toys, changing tables + plenty of new practical considerations. But it can also bring bursts of colour, character + joy. Your home is still yours - it’s just making room for someone new.
That’s why pattern has always been such an important part of our design at Totter + Tumble. Pattern can bring personality to the floor, make a shared space feel more considered + create a dedicated place for play without making the whole room feel like a nursery.

Pattern can be quiet, too
Pattern doesn’t have to be bold or fussy. Sometimes, it’s the quieter details that make a room feel complete.
Some of our longest-standing Signature pairings use soft, versatile colours. The Globe Trotter’s light dove-grey kilim style print, The Rambler’s fresh sage floral, The Roamer’s subtle grey chevron and The Mariner’s scalloped motif in sea grass + off-white.
“They’re subtle + easy to live with,” says our founder, Susie. “They look brilliant in living rooms, playrooms + bedrooms, wherever you need them in your home.”
These designs add interest without demanding attention from everything else in the room. Calm + considered, but never plain.
As Susie puts it, “They’re true to the brand, true to the home + true to how modern families live.”

A little playfulness goes a long way
Of course, sometimes you do want something with a little more personality.
Lively patterns bring a playful touch without feeling overly childish. With the right colours + scale, they can be fun for little ones while still feeling at home in a space shared by the whole family.
“If you’re looking for something a bit more playful, spots, dots + geometric patterns balance timeless design with a little bit of fun,” says Susie.
One of her personal favourites is The Wanderlust, with its deep midnight teal background + light-grey kilim pattern. Switch and on the reverse, The Keeper brings a playful honey-yellow + off-white hexagonal design.
Then there’s The Scout: an iconic dotty Totter + Tumble design + a favourite with Susie and our customers. Its reverse, The Wanderer, has a quieter greenish-grey chevron pattern.
This balance is what we’re always looking for. Because a family space can welcome play without asking the grown-ups to compromise on their style.

Tonal pattern: The Beachcomber + The Gatherer
Our newest Signature pairing takes a softer approach to pattern.
The Gatherer features a fluid net-like motif with hand-drawn texture in tidal pool + egret. On the reverse, The Beachcomber has a delicate scalloped shell pattern in sea glass + white sand.
The two sides are distinctly different, but they share a tonal coastal palette.
“We’ve gone tonal on both sides,” explains Susie. “It makes the mat really easy to flip within your interior.”
Turn it over + the room feels a little different, without having to rethink everything around it.
Available in XL, Standard + Compact, the pairing also shows that a patterned playmat can fill a larger floor space without overwhelming it.

Don’t forget the floor
The floor is one of the biggest spaces in a room, but it’s often the last one we think about.
The right pattern can help pull everything together. It can warm up a pared-back living room, add interest to a peaceful nursery or create a playful foundation for a shared family space.
And it doesn’t need to match every cushion or colour perfectly. Family homes grow + change. Toys appear, furniture moves + rooms take on new jobs. A good pattern should be able to live comfortably with all of it.
Made by us, made your own
We love looking through our tagged feed + seeing how customers have styled their playmats.
The same design can look completely different from one home to the next. It might sit among rich colours + collected pieces in one room, then bring gentle texture to a quiet, neutral space in another.
Our customers often use pattern in ways we hadn’t considered - and we love seeing it.
Because once a playmat arrives in your home, it becomes part of your family’s own story: how you style it, how you live with it + everything that happens on it.

Make room for pattern
A family home doesn’t need to become completely neutral to feel calm. And it doesn’t need to look like a dedicated playroom to make children feel welcome.
Pattern can be quiet + textural, like The Globe Trotter + The Rambler. Tonal + distinctive, like The Beachcomber + The Gatherer. Or more playful + confident, like The Wanderlust + The Keeper or The Scout + The Wanderer.
Whichever feels most like you, pattern can add something to your room without taking anything away.
That’s why we believe pattern belongs in the family home - and on the family floor.
