The Scout play mat by totter and tumble

Meet The Playmat: The Scout

The Scout joined our collection at the end of 2018 and its dotty design has been a favourite for Totter + Tumblers since. Instantly recognisable, The Scout has a playful feel, but is designed with precision, to ensure the mat sits stylishly in family homes.

The Colour Palette

For the colour palette, The Scout takes a hint of the charcoal spotted detailing, to create the soft, white grey grounding. The monochromatic design makes a statement, while not overpowering in the space it is unrolled in.

The Pattern History

Simply meaning ‘One of a number of spots that form a pattern on cloth,’ polka dot patterns were thought of negatively until the 19th Century, when they began to be used for decoration. From there, polka dots have been seen repeatedly in different forms and scales. From the Pointillism movement to contemporary work of Japanese artist Yayoi Kasama, the dots still have a place in art, fashion and design today.

The Vision

The Stats
Because we know one size doesn't fit all, The Scout is available in three sizes. The Standard works as a multipurpose, alternative to an area rug, the Compact is ideal for play spaces in open plan living and the Round is a perfect portable playmat, that can be moved and unrolled wherever the supportive, memory foam floor covering is required.

In Real Life
The Scout offers a flexible design which can be styled into both contemporary and period interiors, with minimal and modern or more rustic finishes. The dotty pattern creates a feeling of texture, but the fully-sealed wipeable surface, a feature on all Totter + Tumble playmats, means it is a practical, family-friendly alternative to a textile rug. This chameleon of a mat can be unrolled in a space with a bold, focal colour but it is at home next to neutral decor as well.
